Some great tips from Vanessa Murray from any RE/MAX brokers attending the Broker Retreat Conference in DC this week. Enjoy Washington DC in the summer. Don't let the humidity get to you. And if you do, bring plenty of deodorant and anti-perspirant!
1. Remember your ABCs
Always be closing. Yep, I said it. The little secret that we all know we do but for some, we do it better than others. This doesn’t mean you should hand out your business cards at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel’s front entrance; after all there is etiquette to being a top broker/owner for RE/MAX but I am saying you should always be looking for opportunities to distinguish yourself and network with others. As a dear friend told me, “use the power of intelligent altruism”. For those of us that didn’t graduate from Darden Business School, altruism is a concern for the welfare of others. Used wisely in real estate, this means turning a “nice to meet you” into a “welcome to your new home”.
Simply check-in upon your arrival at the hotel using FourSquare, make a post on Facebook or let your twitter followers know you’re in town by posting photos of the local sites. You never know if a friend of a friend in your social media circles lives in the DC area and is looking to sell or purchase a home. Stay top of mind at all times and never turn down a hand shake as that person may just be a future client.
2. Get Lost
My favorite thing to do in a new city is getting lost. Please don’t take me literally as this can be very frustrating yet take time to get out of your hotel and walk around the neighborhood as a local not a tourist. It’s fun to see what new spots you can find when you’re not looking for them. Be street smart by doing a little research prior to your departure on the local neighborhood and upon check-in at the hotel, start asking questions. Find out where the best restaurants are, nearest Starbucks, best walking trails, etc. then following your gut and get out there. You’ll have something entertaining to talk about when meeting other brokers from the DC area helping to establish a connection and common bond.
Here are just a few of my new finds blocks away from the host hotel:
• New Heights – upscale, innovative new American cuisine.
• Open City – local hot spot for American style breakfast café and great outside seating at night.
• Umi Japanese Cuisine – if you’re craving sushi, you’ll want to try out this new fusion Japanese with a Manhattan feel on the 2nd floor.
• Starbucks Dupont North - Great pit-stop after a 20 minute walk/run from the hotel.
• Dolcezza Artisanal Gelato - delicious pastries and Italian gelato, need I say more?
• Mimosa Salon –Those of us that will be on our feet for 8+ hours, pedicures are a MUST.
3. Find a local watering hole
This is always my first pit-stop during my ‘lost’ travels. Luckily for me, I didn’t have to travel far from the hotel to find my new favorite place called ‘The Gin Joint’, bar seating for 10 inside or patio seating for larger groups outside, connected to the New Heights Restaurant. The selection of cocktails and brands makes any liquor connoisseur get excited by offering a HUGE selection of Gin. Ask for Nicole, manager, for her recommendation and she won’t disappoint.
4. Be Present
Don’t forget you’re in DC to learn, network and bring home ideas that will make your agents more bacon. Be engaged, be involved and be present by attending as many sessions, speakers, networking opportunities as possible.
